Job Description Summary
Our Private Client Underwriting team assesses a wide variety of unique risks and partners with Sales and Risk Solutions to write to new business and profitably grow in this important, niche market. If you have exceptional critical thinking skills, can prioritize and manage your own workload and find solutions for unique underwriting opportunities, we want to know more about you!

As a Consultant, you'll provide your field expertise to policyholders, Loss Control, Claims, Sales and other areas. We'll count on you to analyze underwriting territory performance, monitor trends, implement changes, call out problem areas and suggest improvements to address those. The Personal Lines Underwriting team members will count on you for technical guidance on regulatory issues, specific risks and agency relationships. In addition, you'll lead book management for assigned agents and underwrite the most complex exposures.

Job Description

Key Responsibilities:
  • Researches agency, district, and market data for assigned underwriting territory to identify business trends and opportunities for profitable growth. Acquires data/information from published sources, company databases, and partnerships with sales, claims, agency or other contacts.
  • Analyzes territorial underwriting performance to plan; identifies problems and proposes action plan to address/resolve these situations. May also have a territory assignment which requires using judgment in accepting, modifying or rejecting risks based on a review of business including loss experience, investigative reports, claims activity, file information and nature of risk.
  • Perform functions within established service level agreements.
  • Monitors, interprets and implements directives and regulations from public entities (insurance departments, etc.) to assure operation is adhering to established policy; involves other offices and the Product Director as appropriate. Accountable for portfolio management for individual assigned agents and district level reports in assigned territory/underwriting district.
  • Contributes to overall field planning process.
  • Provides input and participates in developing reports designed to monitor regional operations results. If a specific territory is assigned, in coordination with sales managers, designs plans to achieve profit and growth.
  • Provides guidance to Underwriting team throughout the agency review process and in developing action plans to address profitability of territory. Partners with Sales management and assigned agents in implementing and driving profitable solutions for all lines of business submitted in assigned underwriting region. Reviews and provides underwriting input about proposed legislation and government regulation and ensures appropriate execution.
  • Assists in underwriting initiatives rollout and implementation. Provides input to leaders about product and pricing related to filed rating plans. Communicates with appropriate internal parties about any system or underwriting process concerns. Responsible for execution of any change or initiative within their territory.
  • Manages coordination of and response to audits (internal/regulatory). Leads underwriting tactics in agency reviews as appropriate. Subject matter authority for responses to complex risks such as construction projects, yacht, catastrophe (CAT) exposure, etc.
  • Develops and supports field-based underwriting or agency training in conjunction with the regional training resources. Acts as an onsite resource for the Underwriting team to interpret and use approved classification systems, rating plans and selection standards to determine eligibility, desirability and accurate classification/pricing benchmarks for assigned product lines.

May perform other responsibilities as assigned.

Reporting Relationships: Reports to Director or Associate Vice President; as many as three Underwriters and Associate Underwriters as direct reports.

Typical Skills and Experiences:

Education: Undergraduate studies in insurance, risk management, economics or business administration preferred.

License/Certification/Designation: Participation in or completion of technical insurance programs, CPCU, CLU, IIA preferred.

Experience: Six years of underwriting experience handling large or complex affluent and high net worth accounts preferred. May consider cross-functional experience from another functional area.

Knowledge/Abilities/Skills: Complex underwriting policies, practices and procedures, insurance law, and underwriting marketing principles and techniques; knowledge of concepts such as catastrophe management, alternative rating methods, and plans and pricing theory; knowledge of treaty and facultative reinsurance, regulatory issues, market conditions and company operations. Ability to communicate effectively, verbally and in writing, for interaction with associates, staff management, agents, customers and regional/service center leadership. Customer focus, technical learning, relationship management, decision quality, priority setting, drive for results, conflict management, command skills, business insight, strategic agility and dealing with ambiguity are necessary competencies. Demonstrated proficiency in solving complex problems.

Other criteria, including leadership skills, competencies and experiences may take precedence.

Staffing exceptions to the above must be approved by the hiring manager's leader and HR Business Partner.

Nationwide utilizes a geographic-specific salary structure. The range for this role in Colorado is$79,000.00 - $121,000.00

Nationwide pays based on a geographic-specific salary structure. The range for this role in Ithaca, New York is$79,000.00 - $163,000.00
